Naples Half / Broke Man's WWU Training Week 1

I'm trying something new today! After a few months of lurking and reading other training recaps, I'm joining Hoho Runs and MissSippiPiddlin’s Weekly Review linkup.

I have two target races this winter:

Broke Man's Winter Warm Up 7.5 Miler in Columbus, OH on January 17, 2016
I'm an ambassador for this race, so you'll see more about it and a 10 week training plan in the coming weeks. It's a great, locally run race with two distances: 7.5 and 13.1. In addition, the Broke Man's series has expanded with three other races in Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati. They're all super affordable right now ($10-20) so if you're looking to cross off Ohio in 2016, sign up now!
Training Plan: 12 weeks

Paradise Coast (Naples) Half Marathon in Naples, FL on February 14, 2016
I signed up for the Naples Half in March and Alex will be running the 5k. We're going down for a week and will meet up with my parents after we tour Tampa on our own. It will be interesting to go from the cold, dreary Ohio weather to the hot and humid temps of southern Florida. I'm not sure if I'll push for a PR or not. It's a flat course,  but I'm not a strong runner in warmer temps.
Training Plan: 15 weeks. It was going to be 16, but I was pretty lazy for two weeks after Loveland. I'm used to 20 week plans with my training group (MIT Columbus), so it should be interesting!

Some background on where I am and where I want to be:

Goals for winter training:
I want to keep running, no matter the weather. I ran once or twice a week last winter, but ideally I'd like to stick with 3-5 days a week. I enjoy cold weather running, but getting out the door is the tough part.

Speed work:
When my training group resumes in January, I'm going to attend speed work sessions. I know it will be hard and it will kick my butt, but I'm going to attempt it all the same!

Currently chasing the bird:
I've been participating in Oiselle's #chasethebird challenge. I've maintained a daily running streak since 11/2! I've also been running before work, which is unheard of for me. I am not a morning person, but honestly it is so much better to be done with my run before my day really begins.

Finally, my training recap! (They won't all be this wordy. I promise.)

Sunday 11/1: Rest. I was very sick.
Monday 11/2: 2.1 birthday miles, 9:03 pace
Tuesday 11/3: 3 miles, 9:01 pace
Wednesday 11/4: 3.5 miles, 8:56 pace (with a few stops)
Thursday 11/5: 2 miles, 8:16 and 7:50 (with a break in the second mile to breathe)
Friday 11/6: 1 mile, 8:20
Saturday 11/7: 4 scenic miles w/friend, 9:48 pace
Sunday 11/8: 1 mile, 7:49 (no breaks!)

Total: 16.7 miles

  1. How awesome are those entry fees? What??? I was going to ask after I saw the name Broke Man's but I'm so glad you posted them! I was not much of a morning runner either until this summer when the temps and humidity were more than I could handle. Now I'm in Central Mississippi and I know what hot is but this summer was a lot like Hell! So I changed my runs to the mornings and haven't' looked back! I love going ahead and getting them done! I'm so very glad you decided to join us for Weekly Wrap and I do hope you will stick around and make it a habit each week! :)

    1. Oh man the entry fees rock. AND I just found a trail race next weekend that's $10 plus a 6 pack of beer... and you get to sample the beers people bring after.
I'm hoping I can keep up my morning routine. Also hoping the Weekly Wrap Up keeps me accountable! I've really enjoyed reading everyone's posts.

  2. Welcome to the Weekly Wrap, Elizabeth! We are delighted to have you join us. I've run quite a few races in the FL panhandle. You never know what kind of weather you will get in the Winter there but I always enjoy going. The routes are typically flat too. $10-$20 is unheard of! Even for a local 5k around here, you are going to pay at least $30. I am definitely a morning person. If I don't get it done in the morning, it's not going to happen. I hope we'll see you again next week.

    1. The entry fees are wild. Our local 5ks are the same. I get really excited if I find one for $25-30. Thank you for the welcome! I will definitely be back next week.

  3. Those entry fees are awesome! There's several half's that I want to do next year and the entry fees just went up October 31st. I'm going to be saving up my birthday and Christmas money for those. Looks like you had a great week of running. I attempted the Runner's World Summer Streak this past summer, 41 days of running. I only made it 17 because I got the stomach bug. I would attempt to do it again to stay motivated in the hot months, but a month or two is the longest I could see myself going. I can't believe the people who have been streaking for years.

    1. I am worried about getting sick or something like that. I missed day 1 because of a stomach bug, so I'll just add it to the end (day after Thanksgiving) to feel more honest. ;) I'm with you: how to people keep their streaks going for years?!

  4. It's going to be so tough to go outside on the first icy day! Running in snow is ok... but only if it can be packed down and I can avoid falling. ;)
