Blurry movie selfie
Monday was a rest day. Alex has a Subaru and periodically receives offers for free things, so we went to see the IMAX movie National Parks Adventure 3D at our local science museum (COSI). Subaru was a main sponsor of the film and held a small showing with a food and drink reception. The spread was fantastic and we both enjoyed the film. The scenery is gorgeous and I'd recommend seeing it.

Tuesday's weather was amazing, so I put on shorts and a tank and set off for a 4 mile (unintentional) progression (8:52, 8:41, 8:38, 8:32). Unfortunately, it was my third run in my Altras – which I just reviewed – and I think I went too fast for them. During the run I had to stop, stretch, and re-tie my shoes. I made it the rest of the way home as it seemed like I'd worked out the pain, but the tightness behind my knee returned Wednesday before I went to work. I iced it and felt okay.

Matchy matchy on Thursday
Wednesday was a crappy day. Work ran over, and even though I left at 5:15, I continued to work from home for the next hour. I should have stopped. Around 6:15 I knew I was going to miss the 6:30 group speedwork. My knee was still bugging me a bit, it started to rain, I was running late... I let the excuses pile on a didn't go. I regretted it the rest of the night. I needed that stress relief! Plus, I missed my longest mid-week run (6 miles).

Thursday rained all day, but at least it was relatively warm. I somehow convinced Alex to go for a run. We headed to the local track where I figured I could make up my missed speedwork. Unfortunately, the girl's field hockey team was practicing so we took our run to the streets. Even though we were running at a slower pace than I normally run with him, we were dodging puddles and mud and we were tired after 3 miles. I could have kept going, but he was done. Even though it rained the entire run, we had a great time.

Friday: my new shorts were amazing
I still needed my 6 mile run, so on Friday after work Alex and I went down to Griggs Reservoir to run and bike. I'm glad he went with me! He'd never been on that route, so I think it was fun for him. We had a lot of rain this week and the river was so high the docks were removed and part of the lower path was flooded. We took the high road which = more hills. The biggest incline was only 50–60 feet, but for Columbus that is pretty major. It was a good out and back of a few rollers, so maybe I'll go back to get more hill work. While we were there a high school crew team was practicing. It was fun to run alongside the rowers and keep up... for a little while. After our run we [cleaned up and] went out to eat / drink.

Saturday was my normal group run. The group was much smaller than normal (due to St. Patrick's and Pi Day races), which was nice because last time I got stuck in the middle of the pack and felt trapped. My knee was feeling pretty rough. I made it through without issue, but I think I'll only use the new Altras on short runs for a while. I want to use them at a 4.5 mile trail race April 2, but it's not worth it if I keep having pain.

I intended to make up a missed 5 on Sunday, but I'm taking it easy with my knee and I'm pain free (!). Today has been productive. We signed up for two 5Ks in April. I'm so happy Alex is back in race mode (he likes running in spring and fall). He installed bathroom shelves and I reorganized our toiletries, then the kitchen cabinets, and I'm making a stew. Time to relax with some wine!

Other news: I'm 98% sure I'm running Rock 'n' Roll Nashville on April 30! Some running friends have been trying to talk me into it since October, but my spring was up-in-the-air. They finally convinced me yesterday. We'll see!! This will be my first RnR and I think I'll run it for fun vs. time. I'm hoping to end my streak of canceled / black flagged out-of-state races!

Have you tried Altras?
Are any of you running RnR Nashville?

  1. I wish I was running RnR Nashville! I've never been there. I think you will do great! Don't sweat the missed workouts--you've got plenty in the tank.

  2. I have tried Altras before and didn't care for those. My sister used to run in them all the time and always had pain. Since she stopped running in them the pain has diminished. I ran rock n roll Nashville and really enjoyed it last yr. My friend is running her first 5k there this yr. I wish i could go back and run that w her.

    1. I'm looking forward to RnR Nashville! I officially signed up after I published this post. No going back. ;) I may have to admit defeat with the Altras. My husband got some, too, and really likes them, but he doesn't need special shoes to run.

  3. 20 miles is a strong week! I would love to go back to Nashville. It's such a fun town but I don't think I can swing it for April. I definitely would stop running in the Altras to see if my knee felt better. You were wise to rest today instead of doing the makeup run. It will not matter in the long run (pun intended). Thanks for linking with us Elizabeth.

    1. Thanks for the advice! I had such a productive day around the house (rare when I run on weekends), so I think it worked out for the best. I'm looking forward to seeing more of Nashville and trying my first RnR race. :)

  4. I have never tried Altra shoes because I have been in the Brooks Ravenna for over 5 years and they work for me! I guess I hate change. Sometimes it is important to listen to your body and it you need an added rest day, it will not hurt you.

    1. I have been in my Saucony Omnis for a few years now and trying a new shoe reminded me why I've stuck with them so long! I'll be sad if Saucony ever changes them.

  5. RnR Nashville was my first-ever race in 2007! Back then they called it the Country Music half, though. I'm pretty sure that's the same race as the one you are talking about. I loved that race and I hope everything works out with it if you do decide to run it!

    1. Thank you! I looked it up and it did used to be the Country Music half. It'll be a bit hillier than I'm used to in Ohio, but I'm going to try to run it for fun. :)

  8. I have not tried Altra. I am sticking with my Brooks GTS which seem to be working for me. Did you sign up for the race ? The RnR series have not come to France yet....

    1. I did sign up for the race! I usually like smaller races, so we'll see if I can get sucked into the RnR experience. I'm excited to see Nashville on two feet.
