Feb 8–21: Training Recaps

One of my photos from Naples Pier

Welcome to another Weekly Review linkup with Hoho Runs and MissSippiPiddlin. I'm currently directionless (I haven't booked another race), but I'm still running.

I'm back! I was out of town for 8 days to Florida, so I'm recapping the last two weeks of activity. As I mentioned, my goal race was postponed so I didn't have a chance to test myself in a half marathon race after my pretty awesome winter training cycle. C'est la vie.

Wearing Oiselle for #singletSaturday
I finished my run streak on day 100 and was a little relieved I didn't have to fit in a treadmill run after we arrived in Tampa late Wednesday night. I miss the streak now that it's been almost two weeks, but I'm going to build back up to 5 runs a week and see where it goes.

I found a great paved trail near our hotel in Tampa (Flatwoods Park) and decided to wake up early Saturday morning to get in a 13.1 mile run to make up for my postponed race. Holy cow!! It was already super hot with 94% humidity at 8am and I was melting by mile 2. The path was fantastic, but it was full sun every half mile. I had to stop for water each mile and when I hit a fork in the path I decided to turn around and head back to Alex in the car. Not the 13.1 I wanted, but the heat got me and I couldn't trick myself into thinking it was a race. I did maintain a decent speed, but I should have started earlier. In my defense it was the hottest day during our time in Tampa.

Around lunch we met up with my parents at the Tampa airport and watched the Olympic Trials in the Marriott bar. After my morning run, I couldn't imagine running a marathon in intense heat. It was an exciting race. I'm bummed about Kara Goucher, but I loved seeing Desi and Meb!

Sunset run to the beach
I did a decent job keeping up with my runs during the first week of vacation, but not so much the second. Alex and I ran to the beach and back Sunday the 14th and again on Wednesday to catch the sunset. It was tough to push myself in the 75+ heat, but we got it done! The rest of my vacation days (Monday-Thursday) were spent touring Naples and the Everglades with my parents.

I got really sick on Friday during my first day back to work and had to leave early (ugh). Originally I thought it was food poisoning, but when I got to work Monday a couple other folks had the sickness and I found out it was super-contagious Norovirus. Awesome. Anyway, I was out of commission Friday night and only ate Saltines. We had the Fight for Air Climb Saturday morning and I didn't want to miss it since it was Alex's event. Recap here. (Don't worry, I didn't get sick.)

Sunday was Warm Up for Boston, where I "raced" the 5k (and won an award!), then ran more miles with Chelsea after. Recap with photos here! Most importantly, 16.8 miles is a distance PR for me!

The past two weeks were light. Yes, I could have fit more, but I didn't feel like trying to cram runs into vacation days. If it's just Alex and me on a trip I usually run, but having my parents there made it hard to justify planning our collective days around my runs! It was nice to have a break from training, but I'm definitely ready to get back to it this week.

Do you like to take a week off every so often?
Do you run on vacation?

  1. Balance is key on vacation. I never want to be in a position where my training dominates a vacation. If I can workout, great but I won't sacrifice vacation time for a workout. But that's just me... :) -C

  2. Naples is my favorite place. I do try to run on vacations but usually don't have time for a long one.

    1. I'd never been to Naples before and I was so surprised by how much I liked it! The beaches were wonderful and we had a great time seeing all of those gorgeous mansions near the pier.

  3. I hope you had a wonderful vacation and mini running break. Congratulations on reaching day 100 on your streak. I read your recaps on the Climb (no way could I do that!) and the Warm Up. Your 5k time was incredible! It is always nice to receive an award! We work hard, you know? Thanks for linking with us Elizabeth. What's next?

    1. Thank you! The award was my first ever, so that was cool. I think I'm going to register for my next half soon. Narrowing it down, but it looks like it'll be in early April. :)

  5. Great job getting in your miles while on vacation! It's always fun to explore new places through running. I just read your race recap. Congrats on your strong 5k finish and top 10 placement! Also, congrats on a new distance PR! I can't imagine running 13.7 miles after running a 5k.
